The thing to remember is that Google and other search engines have to play a balancing game between providing relevant (free) results to their searchers and (paid) advertising space for their customers. If their search results start tipping too heavily towards advertisers, then users will get frustrated about not finding what they’re looking for and stop using the search service.
A few years ago, the search companies realized that a large percentage of the most relevant search results were for local businesses. Think about how people use search engines nowadays – looking for directions to the nearest dentist or show times and location for a movie they want to see. This is where local businesses have a tremendous advantage over larger advertisers – they can provide pinpoint results for what people are already looking for and Google will love them for it.
The key is to understand how to describe your services to the search engines so people can actually find you. Not tough, but it does require some technical knowledge and time.
As far as these directories go – a website always helps, but it’s not necessary (most of your customers might want to just call you on the phone or swing by the store if it’s in the neighborhood) and almost all search engines and directories will offer free listings as well as premium features for a fee.
It’s up to you to decide whether the premium features can benefit you, but I would definitely recommend getting your listings posted on Google Places, Bing Local Listing Center, and Yahoo Local.
I never considered that the Internet was a “level playing field.” I thought that you had to have lots of money, a tech staff, or a marketing department to really get any exposure.
You mean I can get started even without a website? Do I have to pay money to these directories?
